7 rooms flooded at Carleton Lodge due to second floor leak

OFS worked efficiently during a flood at Carleton Lodge Saturday to ensure residents were not displaced from their homes.
In a post on, Ottawa Fire Services said it received a call from on-site staff facility shortly after 2:30 p.m. Saturday reporting water leaking from the second floor. The caller stated concern of the ceiling collapsing.
A subsequent call from a monitoring agency reported active alarms in the building.
Firefighters arrived at the scene on Lodge Road in Barrhaven and were met by staff who confirmed a large water leak. Staff noted no maintenance personnel were on site but they had been notified.
Crews quickly located flooding in seven rooms on the first floor and began working to identify the source of the leak.
The leak was found on the second floor.
To redirect water out of windows, crews constructed a catch basin and shut off the water supply.
Once the leak was stopped, firefighters removed toilets to use as temporary drains.
Initially a plan was in place to relocate approximately 30 residents to another long-term care home but the City of Ottawa confirmed in a statement to city news that the measure was not needed.
“Beds were delivered from the Peter D. Clark Centre, and additional space was secured within Carleton Lodge, allowing residents to remain on site,” a spokesperson for the city said.
Firefighters cleared the scene shortly before 11 p.m.
Correction: A previous version of this story stated that residents were relocated. While that was the initial plan, that measure was ultimately not needed and all residents remained on the property.
