An Ottawa teenager is facing several charges after a provincial police officer stopped a bright blue Audi on Wednesday.
Around 11:00 a.m., the plates on the car were picked up by an OPP automated licence plate recognition (ALPR) camera that showed the owner of the vehicle was suspended.
When police stopped the car on Highway 417, the G1 driver was given six charges. The 17-year-old male is expected in a Provincial Court at a later date.
The camera software is programmed into the cruisers and can scan databases for licence plates and tell the officer within seconds if there are any issues with the vehicle. Often, the notifications coming through are for people without a valid license because people are forgetting to update it online.
In 2021, the province changed its requirement and did not send people reminders to update their licence and health card in the mail, something that needs to be done every five years.
People can sign up on the Service Ontario website to get text and email reminders for their licence before it expires.
