The Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged a driver who caused a collision on a portion of Highway 60 after slowing for a turtle crossing.
On June 10, around 6 p.m., officers responded to a two-vehicle collision that caused a portion of Highway 60 to close in North Algona-Wilberforce Township. An investigation found that an eastbound car slowed down or stopped on the road while a turtle crossed.
A car travelling behind the stopped vehicle was unable to slow down and hit the car from behind. The highway was closed for several hours to allow for an investigation and clean up from the aftermath.
The Ottawa driver has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act.
The OPP reminds vehicles that stopping in a live lane of traffic creates a significant risk to them and other road users. Should you encounter wildlife on the roadway, do not stop in traffic lanes. Contact police if assistance is needed.
