Man facing 61 charges after many break-and-enter incidents in east end

A 45-year-old man is facing dozens of charges in connection with several break-and-enters in the Vanier and Overbrook neighbourhoods.

Ottawa police launched the investigation in February after a string of break-ins impacted businesses in the east-end communities. Since then, 20 incidents have happened, all targeting businesses, some where break-ins occurred more than once.

As a result, officers arrested and charged a man with a total of 61 offences, including multiple counts of break and enter, mischief, possession of break-in instruments and breaches of probation.

He’s set to appear in court next week.

“The OPS continues to prioritize property crime enforcement and encourages business owners and residents to report suspicious activity,” the press release reads.

Police laid over 100 charges in separate case

This comes after officials laid dozens of charges in relation to multiple cases of property crimes, including break-ins earlier this year.

In the incidents, they linked it back to a 29-year-old man who is accused of the incidents between March and May across the city. This arrest helped solve 40 investigations involving many incidents of retail theft, break-and-enters and fraud, police said.

Police suggest that even though many of the individual robberies were thefts under $5,000, the total financial impact related to the offences surpasses $100,000. This accounts for the stolen property, damages caused and costs incurred by victims.

In total, the accused faces 120 charges.
