Liberal John Fraser chosen as candidate to replace Dalton McGuinty

OTTAWA – Liberals in Ottawa-South have chosen their candidate to replace former Premier Dalton McGuinty.

John Fraser, a former executive to McGuinty, accepted the nomination Thursday evening, and Premier Kathleen Wynne is expected to call a byelection for the riding later this summer.

Running for the Progressive Conservatives will be Matt Young, while the Green Party will go with James Mihaychuk, the same candidate who ran in the 2011 election.

The New Democrats have yet to choose their candidate.

Wynne must also call byelections in Windsor-Tecumseh and London-West by Aug. 15 to replace former cabinet ministers Dwight Duncan and Chris Bentley, who both quit in February after she became premier.

Wynne does have until December to call a byelection in Ottawa-South, but says “there’s a good possibility” all three votes will be held on the same day.
