Ramadan begins

OTTAWA – Muslims around the world began observing Ramadan at sundown.

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and during the month, Muslims refrain from eating or drinking any liquids between sunrise and sunset.

Fasting is mandatory for adult Muslims, except those who are ill, travelling, pregnant or diabetic. Sexual relations and swearing are also forbidden during the 29 days.

According to Islam, the rewards of fasting are many but in this month they are believed to be multiplied.
