CHEO hoping annual telethon can deliver much needed funds

It’s hard to find a parent in this town who doesn’t have a CHEO story.

You’ll get to hear a lot of those stories and get a taste of what life is like at the hospital tonight as the CHEO Telethon begins on CTV.

It’s the 28th year for the telethon and as hospital CEO Michele Bilodeau tells 1310News, fundraising is crucial to the hospital’s existence.

“All hospitals are relying on fundraising because in recent years the funding we receive from government has not been sufficient to really help us develop the programs and improve the services to the patients,” says Bilodeau.

“With our new emergency room we’ve been able to reduce our wait times by 20 per cent,” added Bilodeau. “Naturally, we’re probably victims of our success because the number of visits in the emergency room has gone from 54,000 two years ago to 60,000 last year.”

Our country station, Y101 held a radiothon earlier this week, raising $106,000.

The telethon starts at 7 p.m.
