Interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae disagrees with higher E-I premiums

TORONTO – Finance Minister Jim Flaherty’s office is scoffing at Liberal leader Bob Rae’s complaint about payroll taxes.
Rae is blasting the government for raising Employment Insurance premiums as of tomorrow.
He said higher premiums will penalize Canadians already struggling to make ends meet, and will also discourage employers from hiring.
A spokesman for Flaherty said the government introduced a small business hiring tax credit in the budget.
Chisholm Pothier said it’s designed to give employers a break on EI premiums and encourage them to hire new employees.
But he said the Liberals voted against the credit.
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation said premium hikes for employment insurance and the Canada Pension Plan will collect an extra 306 dollars per employee from workers and their employers in the coming year.
