Ottawa Fire and police said arson is suspected as the cause of of a fire which destroyed the 13th floor of a high rise in the city’s south end.
Ottawa Fire platoon chief David Thompson told 1310News fire fighters were called to the scene at 2850 Cedarwood Drive just after 7 p.m. Sunday
“Crews arrived shortly after,” he said. “They moved to the 13th floor, where they discovered a fire in the hallway. It was quickly upgraded to a second alarm, as we were getting reports of multiple people trapped in their apartments and on their balconies.”
He said fire crews evacuated the building and were able to save six people trapped on the 13th floor, by bringing them down the stairwells.
No one was injured.
Thompson said this arson is especially serious because it caused extensive damage and endangered lives.
He said the fire spread into several apartments on the 13th floor.
All residents were allowed to return home except for those on the 13th floor, who had to find somewhere else to spend the night
