Canada Day 2020: What’s open and closed in Ottawa

Most Ottawa bars and restaurants that have reopened for patio service will be open on Wednesday, July 1.

Many grocery stores and retail outlets in both Ontario and Quebec will be closed for Canada Day. The Loblaws grocery stores on Rideau Street will be open 24 hours, while the Whole Foods store at Lansdowne will open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

All LCBO and Beer Store locations will be closed on Canada Day.

In Quebec, SAQ liquor stores are expected to remain open, except for outlets located inside malls.

Banks will be closed on Wednesday.

Parking

All City of Ottawa parking regulations and restrictions will apply on Canada Day. The city reinstated regular parking regulations this week, but says it will only be issuing warnings to vehicles parked in areas where they have exceeded time limits listed on signs. Tickets will start to be handed out for these infractions on July 6. Tickets are already being issued for all other parking infractions.

Green bin, recycling and garbage collection

There will be no curbside green bin, recycling or garbage collection on Canada Day. Collection will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.

Multi-residential recycling, green bin and bulky-item collection will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.

The Trail Road Waste Facility will be open.

Transit service

OC Transpo will offer no-charge service all day on Canada Day.

Customers are required to wear cloth masks when entering buses, trains, stations and Para Transpo minibuses and contracted taxis. The city is asking that residents not use transit if sick.

Buses are expected to run on a Sunday schedule. Night service will begin at 11 p.m. on Routes 39, 45, 57, 61, 75 and 97.

O-Train Line 1 will operate on a reduced weekday schedule, with increased evening service until 1 a.m. on Thursday, July 2.

O-Train Line 2 bus service will operate on a Saturday schedule, with increased service in the evening.

OC Transpo’s Customer Service Centre in the Rideau Centre will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. All other Customer Service Centres are closed until further notice due to COVID-19. 

Para Transpo will operate a holiday service. Regular scheduled trips are automatically cancelled on Wednesday, July 1. 

Fireworks

Consumer fireworks may only be discharged between Tuesday, June 30 and Thursday, July 2. 

Fireworks displays must be directly supervised by someone aged 18 or older and must take place on private property and with the property owner’s permission. The city says the display must not cause danger or nuisance to any person or property.

Recreation services

Beaches and splash pads will be open, weather permitting. Check water quality for swimmability here.

Ottawa Public Health

The Brewer Assessment Centre will be closed.

The Moodie and Heron care clinics will be open regular hours, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The Sexual Health Clinic and satellite clinics will be closed.

The Ottawa Public Health Information Centre will not be taking general calls. Ottawa Public Health’s COVID-19 phone line at 613-580-6744 will be open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Canada Day.

The Vaccine Distribution Centre at 100 Constellation will be closed.

Municipal child care services

All Municipal Child Care Centres will be closed on Wednesday, July 1.

Library Services

All Ottawa Public Libraries offering the curbside returns and pick-up service will be closed on Wednesday, July 1.

The City’s 3-1-1 Contact Centre will be open for urgent matters that require immediate attention.
