Carleton University raises issue of picket protocols over strike delays

By OttawaMatters Staff

Student and Visitor complaints prompted Carleton University to issue a statement Thursday reminding striking CUPE 2424 workers to respect picket protocols that were agreed to by both sides.

In a release on the university's website, signed by Assistant Vice-President (Human Resources) Rob Thomas, the university cites ” undue interruptions and unacceptable delays” for people arriving at and leaving the campus at both vehicle access points.

Students complained that waits at picket lines caused them to be late for classes and mid-term exams.

The university said Ottawa Police were called to assist with traffic management, over safety concerns.

Around 800 staff, including administrative, library, and technical workers walked off the job after failing to reach an accord on a new contract.

The statement referred to a media interview Wednesday given by the president of CUPE 2424 in which the union representative stated a request for more dates for bargaining had been requested.

The university disputed that claim in the release saying “Regrettably, that statement is untrue.”
