City of Ottawa holding Heron Gate developer accountable for 1,000 affordable housing units

By Mike Vlasveld

Hazelview Investments, the company responsible for Heron Gate's latest development, has entered into a legally binding contract with the City of Ottawa, to hold it accountable for certain social commitments.

“One of the big, important aspects of it is that 1,000 of those units will be affordable housing units, and that is one of the largest commitments to affordable housing by the private sector in the history of Ottawa,” Alta Vista Ward City Councillor Jean Cloutier tells CityNews Ottawa's The Sam Laprade Show on Wednesday, August 18.

Hundreds of homes were demolished in Heron Gate and residents evicted in 2016 and 2018.

Cloutier says the residents in that area have many needs at the moment.

“Better housing. Housing that is safe, that is comfortable, that is affordable. They want better public spaces and transportation connectivity. They want better recreation.”
