City of Ottawa to install 20 more red light cameras at dangerous intersections

By Mike Vlasveld

The City of Ottawa thinks the installation of more red light cameras will help bring down the number of serious collisions at certain intersections.

Its Red-Light Camera Program was expanded Wednesday, to include an additional 20 locations, bringing the total number of active red-light cameras in the city to 74 by the end of 2020.

The city explained, the presence of red-light cameras at targeted intersections has shown to reduce high-speed, t-bone crashes which often send passengers to hospital.

Site selection for the cameras is based on the number of collisions, over a five-year period, that could be prevented by reducing red-light-running incidents.

Six red-light cameras will be installed by the end of 2019:

  • *Bank Street and Hunt Club Road (Ward 10)
  • Besserer Street and King Edward Avenue (Ward 12)
  • Carling Avenue and Iroquois Road (Ward 7)
  • *Catherine Street and O'Connor Street (Ward 14)
  • Russell Road and St-Laurent Boulevard (Ward 18)
  • Walkley Road and Don Reid Drive (shared boundaries of Wards 10 and 18)

*Indicates intersections at which a red-light camera is already in place. These locations are receiving second red-light cameras because crash data indicates the installation of a camera on another approach to the intersection will reduce collisions that continue to happen.

Another 14 locations will be equipped with red-light cameras by the end of 2020. The city said those locations will be identified based on a review of red-light-running collisions between 2014 and 2018. Once the 14 locations have been confirmed, a memo will be sent to City Council listing the specific locations.

Residents can visit ottawa.ca for more information on the Red-Light Camera Program and see a list of existing red-light camera locations.
