Construction on Parliament Hill’s Centre Block halted until truck convoy clears out

By Dani-Elle Dubé

All construction on Parliament Hill’s Centre Block is ceased until Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) deems it safe for construction crews to continue their work.

Before the truck convoy rolled into town, the decision was made to halt construction on the block in anticipation of the protest on Parliament Hill.

In a statement to CityNews Ottawa, spokesperson Olivier Pilon said: “The safety and security of workers on Parliament Hill remains a top priority for Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC). PSPC and the Parliamentary Protective Service made the decision on January 28 to close the Centre Block construction site due to the ongoing protest taking place in Ottawa.”

“The site remains closed and PSPC is monitoring the situation in close collaboration with the Parliamentary Protective Service, the House of Commons, the Senate of Canada, and the Library of Parliament, and will adjust our activities, as needed.”

The average number of people working on Centre Block construction site on a daily basis was about 350 to 400 people when the site was temporarily closed down.

This includes about 100 salaried staff for the construction manager and about 250-300 trades people.

PSPC is unable to give an exact day of when crews will be able to return to work.

The truck convoy protest in Ottawa is on its 12th day of occupying the downtown core.
