Coun. Brockington reveals he’s seeking re-election

By Anil Jhalli

River Ward Coun. Riley Brockington's name will appear on the ballot when Ottawa voters go to the polls in October's municipal election.

Brockington said on The Rob Snow Show on Friday, April 22 that he “absolutely” is running to keep his seat on Ottawa city council.

Before securing his seat as River Ward councillor in 2014, Brockington was a trustee with the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. During his two terms as a city councillor, he has served on the City of Ottawa's planning committee, environment committee, transit commission, Ottawa Public Library board, and built heritage sub-committee.

In late 2018, he was appointed to be the City of Ottawa's representative on the Association of Municipalities of Ontario for a two-year term and in April 2019, he was appointed to be council’s representative on the Canadian Capital Cities Organization.

“I love what I do,” he said. “There's still significant work that I am passionate about in River Ward and across the city, and I will be on the ballot come October.”

On Thursday, April 21, the Ontario government said it is going to make the highway between Maitland and the 416 an eight-lane highway, an issue that could profoundly impact residents in his ward for 2022.

Brockington said with the amount of money the City of Ottawa has spent on establishing a light rail transit (LRT) system, there should be an emphasis on the city's transit system, and not funding more money into Queensway expansion.

“I live in reality,” he said.  “You need to move people in the city through multiple modes including the Queensway, and I am not opposed to using the Queensway, I just haven't seen a business case when we are spending so much money on public transit and need people to take transit”
