Coun. Eli El-Chantiry not seeking re-election

By Anil Jhalli

West Carleton-March Coun. Eli El-Chantiry announced on July 28 that he is not seeking re-election this fall.

The councillor for the west end ward told The Sam Laprade Show with guest host Derick Fage on Friday, July 29 the decision was not an easy one to make.

It's hard to say goodbye to something you love so much,” the councillor said. “I love this city and I love the people I represent.”

El-Chantiry first ran for city council in 2003. In October 2018, El-Chantiry was voted in for the fifth time as councillor for the West Carleton-March ward.

While he admitted the decision not to run was difficult, he felt the time.

“I am now 65-years-old and have ran for five consecutive terms of council,” he said. “This last term of council, really sucked the life out of many of us, and it was the right time.”

There are currently two candidates registered to run in the West Carleton-March ward. Clarke Kelly and Nagmani Sharma are both listed as candidates for the October 24 municipal election.
