Cyberattacks are launched daily, targeting unsuspecting individuals through emails, texts and voicemails. But an October cybersecurity campaign is helping the public learn more about the importance of online safety.
Kevin Dawson, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of ISA Cybersecurity, told The Sam Laprade Show on Oct. 4 that people may be surprised at how long it takes to contain a breach.
“The average time to identify and contain a breach is almost 323 days,” he said. “Canadians are concerned cyber attacks are only going to increase…and we're in a digital age and everything we do is online, and puts us at risk.”
The scams come in all forms, but one of the most common methods is phishing, an unsolicited email that tries to get the recipient to click on something, he explained, adding that this can also come in the form of voicemails and text messages.
Dawson advises people not to share so much information on social media, including things like their pet's name and family information, which can all be exploited to create a convincing message that is usually used for identity fraud.
He added that if an email or message looks too good to be true, it probably is.
“And if there's an urgency or a call to action quickly, then probably be speculative or look into it further,” he said.
