A rally to further the battle against gender-based violence was held at the Canadian Tribute to Human Rights monument on Elgin on Friday afternoon.
A local organization, Because Wilno, organized the rally.
“We saw people (at the rally) who are sick of having to come to vigils for dead women,” said Holly Campbell, founder of Because Wilno.
She added, “we need to strike while the iron is hot,” stating, “the general public needs to get off their butts, we need to seriously mobilize and force those with powers to use it for good.”
Because Wilno was founded after Carol Culleton, Anastasia Kuzyk, and Nathalie Warmerdam, were killed in their homes near Wilno, Ont.
Several politicians spoke at the rally:
“There's still so much work we could be doing in Ontario, as much progress as we've made, the work is clearly not over if we've had 19 women killed this year alone, just in Ontario.” said Julie LaLonde, a women's rights advocate.
The rally was held after 59-year-old Elisabeth Salm was found beaten unconscious and half-naked at her workplace in the Christian Science Reading Room. Salm succumbed to her injuries the next day.
