Hydro Ottawa is working to restore power in eight areas of the city after a severe thunderstorm blew through.

As of 6:55 p.m., August 17, the utility says 2,790 customers are without power. More than 800 of those people are in the Dunrobin and West Carleton-March area.

Hydro Ottawa says it hopes to have power restored in all eight sections by 12:30 a.m.

Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for the capital region late Monday afternoon, which later changed to a severe thunderstorm warning. The storm was capable of delivering wind gusts of 100 km/hr and toonie-sized hail.

The severe storm warning has since ended.
