Increased police patrols around Ottawa mosques after New Zealand shootings

By Jason White

Ottawa's police service will check in on local Muslim places of worship, after two mass shootings during Friday prayers at mosques in New Zealand.

Ottawa police tell 1310 NEWS that its community policing units will check in with local mosques, and frontline officers will step up patrols. The police service says it's become standard procedure whenever attacks like the New Zealand shootings happen elsewhere in the world.

At least 49 people were killed in mass shootings at two mosques full of worshippers attending Friday prayers in Christchurch, New Zealand.

One man was arrested and charged with murder in what appeared to be a carefully planned racist attack. Police also defused explosive devices in a car.
