International Day of Pink celebrating diversity, uniting against discrimination

By Alex Black

People all around the world are being encouraged to wear pink, to mark the International Day of Pink.

Every April 14, people around the world are asked to wear pink and stand in solidarity with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and unite against homophobia, transphobia, discrimination, transmisogyny and all forms of bullying.

The theme for 2021's day is “let's say game over to cyberbullying.”

The movement was started in Nova Scotia, by students David Shepherd and Travis Price, to end bullying, discrimination and homophobia. Price and Shepherd saw a gay student being bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school, so a group of students showed up to school in pink shirts to support him.

It has since grown into a movement that sees millions of people wear pink all around the world to remember those positive actions, and to continue to make a difference.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson marked International Day of Pink with tweet, saying discrimination can happen to many individuals, and the 2SLGBTQQIA+ community is no stranger to the bullying and violence that stems from hateful beliefs.
