Joint grant to Algonquin College and CHEO Research Institute supports post pandemic research

Algonquin College and the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) Research Institute received a $234,000 grant from the Government of Canada's New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF).

Delivered through the Canada Research Coordinating Committee and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, funding is provided through the 2021 NFRF Innovative Approaches to Research in the Pandemic Context competition, which supports Canadian-led research in a post-pandemic context.

“It's a tool for clinical researches in medicine to determine what the best treatments or areas of research are important to undertake,” said Kevin Holmes, the managing director of Algonquin's Social Innovations Lab on The Sam Laprade Show on April 5, 2022. “It's a rigorous, long process where researchers would collect all the info in the world on one specific topic, and data can be collected over years.”

Holmes said Algonquin's Social Innovations Lab helps charities and non profits work with digital technology. The partnership between Algonquin and CHEO has been going on for quite some time, he noted.

“We are building this tool to allow researchers to do studies in days and weeks,” added Holmes. “It gives patients the most recent answers about the best treatment to them sooner. There's a lot of knowledge that we need quickly.”

Funding is expected to support the research platform through early 2023.
