Kanata Grade 8 student wins Governor General Sovereign Medal for Volunteers

By Mike Vlasveld

Grace Hill says she was born into volunteerism.

The Grade 8 student at Kanata's Blue Sky School told 1310 NEWS' Ottawa Today with Mark Sutcliffe, her parents have always encouraged her to look outside of herself and community, and recognize the privilege of growing up in Canada.

Listen to their full conversation:

Hill started volunteering at a very young age with her Mom at South Ottawa Race Day, which raises money for local breast cancer research.

She then went on to start a club at her school, focusing on environmental issues. Most recently, Hill and her club have worked to eliminate straws at Blue Sky School.

Now, she has her eye set on a bigger world issue — women's rights. More specifically, she wants to help women in South Sudan, where she has learned that women endure very dangerous living conditions.

She has already started a not-for-profit in South Sudan to build a shelter for people with barriers to attending school. She also supports initiatives in South Sudan through Stand4Education.

Hill has now partnered with a website which helps connect kids from across the globe, who have ideas on how to help the planet.

She received the Governor General Sovereign Medal for Volunteers at Ottawa's WE Day, on November 14.
