Kanata Recreation Complex getting $4.4 million upgrade

The Kanata Recreation Complex is getting a facelift, thanks to new investments from the federal and provincial government.

To reduce the impact of the pandemic on residents, the governments are investing on rebuilding businesses, promoting job creation, growth and investment, as well as ensure health safety.

As a result, $1.8 million will be allocated by the federal government to renovate and expand the centre, as well as $1.4 million from the Ontario government and $1.2 million from the city.

“Investing in recreation centres promotes people's health and well-being and builds inclusive and sustainable communities where people want to live, work and raise families,” Karen McCrimmon, MP for Kanata-Carleton, said on behalf of Catherine McKenna in a statement.

The project will renovate and expand the centre and splash pad by adding new meeting and program rooms, updating the interior, installing an emergency exit stairwell to increase program capacity, updating the facility’s lobby by adding a customer service centre and vestibule, and improve and enlarging the nearby splash pad at Walter Baker Park.

“The expansion and renovations to the Kanata Recreation Centre are welcomed to meet the needs of our growing Kanata neighbourhoods,” Merrilee Fullerton, MPP for Kanata-Carleton, said. “These upgraded facilities will be an important meeting place for families and will serve our community and local sports associations. The Ontario government recognizes the importance of investing in sport and cultural spaces that are an integral part of healthy and vibrant community living.”

Once done, the updated centre on Charlie Rogers Place will give better access to quality cultural, community and recreation spaces and offer residents a safer place to gather.

Over the next 10 years, the Ontario government will be investing about $320 million across the province, and the federal government $407 million in Ontario, that will support new facilities and updates to existing facilities to improve community infrastructure.
