LRT Stage 3 could see raised line to Barrhaven

By Alex Black

The next phase of light rail could include an elevated rail line to Barrhaven.

An environmental assessment of Stage 3 of LRT has been released, studying the best options for the extension of the O-Train from Baseline Station into Barrhaven.

The preferred option is a raised line connecting Baseline Station and the Nepean Sportsplex, then continuing on a reconfigured Transitway along Woodroffe Avenue to Barrhaven Town Centre.

The study also evaluated below-grade and at-grade alternatives, but found a below-grade option would be more expensive, take longer to build and expose the city to more risk and liability. An at-grade alternative was found to not meet design standards or operational and safety requirements.

The study finds an elevated line would be less expensive to build, would avoid geotechnical risks and minimize conflicts with underground utilities.

Due to COVID-19, public consultation on the project is occurring online. Click here by September 23 to give your feedback.
