Nearly week-long heatwave heading for Ottawa, Smiths Falls and the Valley

By Alex Goudge

A nearly week-long heatwave is heading for Ottawa, Smiths Falls and the Valley, with potential record-breaking temperatures and humidex in the 40s.

The heatwave is anticipated to start on Saturday, June 5, and last until Thursday, June 10, with highs expected to surpass 30 Celsius (C) on each one of those days.

CityNews Weather Specialist John Wilson explains this heatwave started as a high-pressure ridge forming over the north-central United States, which then drifted eastward and parked over the Great Lakes where the heat percolated.

“The humidity's the key – when it's not humid, it's just plain hot, but when you add humidity, it gets kind of dangerous,” Wilson explained.

He adds it can get particularly hot in Ottawa amid heatwaves since there is no modifying body of water to provide relief.

Wilson adds, a few daily record temperatures in the range of 33-35 C will be reached next week, but not necessarily surpassed.

“Humidity will stay for a while, but when it gets higher later in the heatwave, that's really trouble… get your air conditioning working.”
