One person has died after an early morning fire in Kanata.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) received a 911 call Tuesday morning just after 5:30 a.m. reporting a blaze in the 200 block of Castlefrank Road, near Terry Fox Drive.

A caller had reported “big flames and smoke from the house,” and someone was inside the one storey single family bungalow home, Ottawa fire said.

The caller broke a window and rescued an individual from the home. The Ottawa Paramedics Service tells CityNews that a woman in her 90s was rescued from the home and taken to hospital for smoke inhalation. Paramedics confirmed that the woman's condition was non-life threatening.

Fire crews arrived on scene four minutes after being dispatched and found the home fully engulfed in smoke and flames, with flames coming out of the roof.

During their extensive search, firefighters located an occupant inside the home who had succumbed to their injuries.

The Ottawa Police Arson Unit is assisting the Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal in a joint investigation.
