The Ottawa Police Service is increasing its presence on post-secondary campuses to ensure a safe back-to-school experience for students, according to Chief Peter Sloly,
He says the move also will ensure the safety of residents living near campuses.
Sloly explains that neighbourhood resource, community, frontline, and undercover plain-clothed officers are expected to be proactively monitoring areas in support of Ottawa Public Health's guidelines.
The chief is echoing statements made by Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson on Wednesday, saying students should be “COVID-wise” when it comes to things like socializing.
He's also reminding those new to the area that police and bylaw officers are in a position to fine anyone not adhering to the rules, up to $1,000.
“We will do so if we discover, large unsafe, unhealthy parties,” Sloly says.
Meanwhile, the chief adds the police service will continue with its joint education, engagement and enforcement campaign, with a focus on education and engagement. He believes this will help remind residents and students to be respectful to neighbours and keep the city safe.
