Ottawa police launching initative to prioritize safety around school zones this week

By CityNews Ottawa

A new initiative takes effect this week which aims to increase safety around school zones.

Starting Monday, March 20, the same week students are returning to classes from their March break, the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) says there will be increased enforcement for violations such as exceeding school zones' speed limits, failing to stop for school buses or endangering road users.

Police say failing to stop for a school bus, in either direction, could result in a fine ranging from $400 to $2,000 along with six demerit points. Police say speedy drivers could also be charged with stunt driving, which could also result in the vehicle being towed.

“We will be focusing on motorists failing to reduce speeds in these areas or failing to stop for school buses,” said Sgt Craig Roberts, OPS Traffic Case Manager, in a release. “This includes failing to respect the safety and direction of school crossing guards across the city,”

He added that parents should not have to worry about their kid's safety during their commute to and from school.

“We are counting on everyone to do their part to keep our children safe,” said Sgt. Roberts.
