UPDATE: Ottawa-Vanier among 27 Ontario polling locations where voting time is extended

By Dani-Elle Dubé

Twenty-seven polling stations have had their voting time extended, and that delay is affecting one local riding.

A source with knowledge of the vote counting told The Canadian press that 19 ridings are affected by the extension.

The Ottawa area riding impacted by the delay is Ottawa-Vanier, where Liberal party member Lucille Collard is working to hold onto her seat.

Others gunning for the spot are PC candidate Patrick Mayangi, NDP candidate Lyra Evans and Green Party candidate Christian Proulx.

Polls in that riding are now set to close at 9:24 p.m.

As a result, counting can’t start in those districts until their polls are closed.

The extensions across the province span between 10 minutes and two hours.

Unaffected polls are set to close across the province at 9 p.m.

In a statement, Elections Ontario confirmed that hours at the provided list of locations were extended “due to delays.”

As of 8 p.m., though, Elections Ontario says that all polls are up and running and continue in all 124 electoral districts in Ontario.

“While we endeavour to have all polls open on time, unavoidable delays may occur,” the statement reads. “In such cases, Ontario’s Chief Electoral Officer has the authority under subsection 40(5)of the Elections Act to extend voting hours.”

There are more than 7,000 voting locations across Ontario, with more than 55,000 election officials helping voters as they cast their ballots.

Polling conducted earlier in the campaign suggests the Progressive Conservatives led by Doug Ford are poised to form a second majority government.
