Over 200 municipal election candidates running in this fall’s election

With the registration for Ottawa's fall municipal election closed, there are over 200 candidates running including for the city's next mayor, city council and school board trustees. 

In total, there are 210 candidates who have been certified to run.

There are officially 14 candidates running to become the next mayor of Ottawa and 106 candidates are running for city council for different wards including Barrhaven West, West Carleton-March, Knoxdale-Merivale, Gloucester-Southgate, Rideau-Vanier, Somerset, Alta Vista, Rideau-Jock and Gloucester-South Nepean. 

There are also 90 candidates running for school board trustees. 

According to a recent memo, eight candidates running for the office of school board trustee have been elected via acclamation as they ran unopposed.

These candidates include: 

  • Jolène Savoie-Day, Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est – Zone 4
  • Robert Rainboth, Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est – Zone 7
  • Dan Boudria, Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est – Zone 8
  • Johanne Lacombe, Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est – Zone 9
  • André Thibodeau, Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est – Zone 11
  • Marc Roy, Conseil des écoles publiques de l'Est de l'Ontario – Zone 6
  • Jacinthe Marcil, Conseil des écoles publiques de l'Est de l'Ontario – Zone 11
  • Samia Ouled Ali, Conseil des écoles publiques de l'Est de l'Ontario – Zone 12

Candidates who are running for positions without any opponents will be acclaimed – or elected by default – Monday, Aug. 22. 

Voters across Ontario will cast their ballots in municipal council and school board elections on Oct. 24.
