The Rideau Canal Skateway is set to open for the 2021 season Thursday.
A 2.4 kilometre section between the Pretoria Bridge and the Bank Street Bridge will open at 8:00 a.m.
Preparations have been underway for weeks now, and the National Capital Commission (NCC) says the recent cold temperatures have been helpful in getting the ice ready.
The countdown is on for our 51st season, and things will look a little different this year due to COVID-19. The #RideauCanal Skateway will open for exercise and local use on Thursday, January 28th at 8am, on 2.4km between the Pretoria Bridge and the Bank St. Bridge! #ottnews pic.twitter.com/rlUKA6RMBN

This year marks the 51st season for the world's largest skating rink.
Earlier this month, the NCC confirmed the ice would be permitted to open during Ontario's state of emergency and province-wide lockdown.
All users will be required to wear a mask at all times while on the Skateway.
The Rideau Canal Skateway team will continue working on other sections as soon as ice conditions are safe and weather permits.
The NCC reminds the public to not venture onto closed sections of the Skateway.
