Senators’ Tim Stuetzle to have surgery for arm injury, out up to eight weeks

Ottawa Senators prospect Tim Stuetzle will have surgery on his arm and will be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks, his DEL team Adler Mannheim announced in German.

In a statement that Sportsnet has translated using Google Translate, Mannheim says Stuetzle was injured in a training session Monday and will have surgery Wednesday. No other specifics were given on the injury, including which arm was hurt.

The Senators released a statement on Tuesday confirming the news.

“In consultation with doctors in Germany and with our own medical staff, it has been determined that Tim requires a surgical procedure to stabilize a fracture,” said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion in the statement. “The procedure is scheduled to take place in Germany later this week and has an expected recovery time of six to eight weeks. Our medical staff will remain in regular contact with Tim and his doctors as he begins his recovery through to the point that he is medically cleared.”

In an interview with the Ottawa Sun's Bruce Garrioch, Mannheim GM Jan-Axel Alavaara provided more information, saying a bone was broken and the injury occurred in a one-on-one drill in practice.

“I don’t have any concerns about the future,” Alavaara said, according to Garrioch.

The Senators selected the speedy forward third overall in last week's NHL Draft and he had 34 points in 41 games with Mannheim last season. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the DEL season isn't expected to start until December, which means Stuetzle may not miss any games with his injury.
