Somerset Village’s new 18-storey high-rise given green light by Ottawa’s planning committee

A high-rise in Somerset Village has been given the go ahead by the City of Ottawa's planning committee.

During the meeting on Thursday, May 26, the City approved the official lan and zoning amendments, as well as heritage permit to facilitate the construction of an 18-storey residential building at the northwest corner of Somerset and O’Connor streets.

The building will add 156 units and ground-floor commercial space to “a highly walkable neighbourhood” and “re-establish a continuous streetscape,” the City said in its announcement.

“To minimize impact on the surrounding community, the slender tower portion would be set back considerably from the building’s base along Somerset Street,” the City said. “The design of the four-storey, red-brick base is inspired by the streetscape and the setback would ensure it echoes the heights of other Somerset Street buildings.”

Recommendations from Thursday’s meeting will rise to council on Wednesday, June 8.
