Special waste collection from May long weekend’s derecho storm ending this week

Cleanup from Ottawa’s May long weekend’s derecho storm continues, but special storm-debris collection from the city will be coming to an end.

In an announcement from city staff relayed through Coun. Keith Egli, special collection will end Wednesday, June 22.

Until then, residents who have tree and other organic debris remaining on their properties are being told to take advantage of the special pickup.

The Trail Road Waste Facility is also still open to accept organic storm-related waste free of charge, with special hours on Saturday, June 25 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“We would also add that residents should not worry if their debris is not picked up by June 22 as it will take a bit of time for us to complete all of our routes,” staff said in a statement posted in Egli’s newsletter.

According to the City of Ottawa’s website, regular curbside waste collection operations will resume after Friday, June 24.

Residents can dispose of organic waste and any remaining spoiled food in their green bin and storm-related brush debris in the leaf and yard waste as part of their regular collections calendar schedule.

Other storm-related waste, like shingles, should be separate from leaf and yard waste.

Broken glass and other short items that may be a risk for handlers should be placed in a cardboard box, labelled clearly for safety and set out separately on garbage day.
