Where and how to take in this year’s Remembrance Day ceremonies in Ottawa

By Alex Black

A modified National Remembrance Day Ceremony will take place at the National War Memorial in Ottawa on Thursday, November 11, to honour Canada's veterans and war dead.

The ceremony will be held in accordance with COVID-19 public health guidelines and those attending are asked to wear a mask or face covering when a physical distance of two metres can't be maintained.

The ceremony, which begins at approximately 10:45 a.m., includes the national anthem, two minutes of silence, a wreath-laying ceremony and a fly-past.

The Royal Canadian Legion will be broadcasting the ceremony live on its Facebook page for anyone who can't or would rather not be there in person.

The annual ceremony at the National Military Cemetery at Beechwood is also being held in person again this year, from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The ceremony will also be livestreamed, but those who wish to attend virtually are invited to register in advance.

The headstone of the Unknown Soldier is illuminated by sunlight from a single window at the Canadian War Museum each Remembrance Day at exactly at 11 a.m. The museum will show live video of the illumination on its website and its Facebook page.

The City of Ottawa is also reminding residents of schedule changes for Remembrance Day.
