129 tickets issued in first week of Ottawa school zone enforcement

By Mike Vlasveld

Ottawa police are keeping a close eye on school zones, with kids back in classes for the first time in about six months, and it's leading to a bunch of fines for residents.

The Ottawa Police Service says a total of 91 drivers were stopped for speeding this week, while another 38 failed to stop at stop signs in various school zones across the city.

One driver was stopped and charged after being caught going 104 km/hr in a 60 km/hr zone, Friday morning.

Officers charged two more drivers for driving while suspended and one driver for driving under a lifetime driving ban. This driver had been prohibited from driving since 2007.

Ottawa police will continue to conduct enforcement in school areas throughout the start of the school year.

It was reported earlier this week that new automated speed cameras had issued more than 10,000 tickets through the month of July. The most recent numbers from the cameras have not been made available.
