Ottawa’s police service is issuing a warning to all demonstrators who are still occupying the downtown core: if your vehicle is blocking streets, you may face criminal charges.
In the warning issued by Ottawa Police Service (OPS) on Wednesday, February 9, anyone who obstructs, interrupts or interferes with the lawful use, enjoyment or operation of property is committing an act known as mischief to property.
The unlawful act of blocking streets in the downtown core is resulting in people being denied the lawful use, enjoyment and operation of their property, OPS said.
“We are providing you notice that anyone blocking streets or assisting others in the block of streets may be committing a criminal offence,” the OPS warned.
“You must immediately cease further unlawful activity or you may face charges.”
Police further explain that those found in violation could be arrested without a warrant.
Whether you are released on bail depends on factors contained in the Criminal Code, they added.
Offence-related property, including vehicles, may also be seized as part of the offence, while vehicle could also be detained and, following conviction, possibly forfeited.
Charges or convictions related to the unlawful activity associated with the demonstration may also lead to denial in crossing the USA border.
