Mayor calling for surveillance camera pilot in ByWard Market to deter violent crime

Ottawa's mayor wants the city to install surveillance cameras in the ByWard Market, in an attempt to curb shootings and stabbings in the area.
Jim Watson told 1310 NEWS' Ottawa Today, Thursday, that he would like to see a test run later this year.
“I've asked our city manager to put together a report that would come to council or committee in the fall, as to what the pilot would look like, where the money is going to come from to fund it and dealing with all the privacy issues that obviously come with cameras in these public locations,” he explained.
Watson also discussed the potential project with the Ottawa's interim police chief.
“Many cities around the world use our CCTV cameras. These cameras are placed in strategic locations,” Watson explained. “He agrees that we should do a pilot project.”
