A 57-year-old Ottawa man has died after crashing an Ultralight plane near North Bay.
Members of the North Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, along with the Bonfield Fire Department and the Bonfield Ambulance Service, responded to the incident just before 10 a.m., Monday.
The crash site had been engulfed in flames and police say local cottagers reacted quickly to the situation.
Approximately 20 to 25 cottagers immediately tried to suppress the flames, using buckets and coolers full of water, handing them over to one another in a chain up to the crash site. With the assistance of the Bonfield Fire Department, the blaze was held under control.
The only occupant on the flight was the operator, Michael Macneil, 57, of Ottawa. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Transportation Safety Board is continuing their investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
