The Special Ingredient of “Home Sweet Home”

By Kara Colynuck

Rich with history, Richmond Ontario was one of the first towns founded in Upper Canada. A plaque commemorates the Military Settlement’s origin in the summer of 1818.

In August of that year, 30 veterans of the 99th Regiment began building the town, which had been named after the governor general, the Duke of Richmond. By year’s end, about 400 families inhabited the area, which became the first large community in today’s Carleton County.

The village did not grow at the rate of its Bytown neighbour to the east, but some of its historic 19th Century buildings still stand as a steadfast reminder of the town’s history. Many feature the high ceilings, wide staircases and functional fireplaces prevalent during that period; built in a time where families often settled together – either close by or in the same home.

At 54 Mary Hill Crescent in Richmond, stands a home that gives a hat tip to those days gone by. Though built in 2004 – almost 200 years after the town’s founding – this house has features that capture the spirit of centuries earlier. Nine-foot ceilings, wide hardwood staircases and cozy fireplaces combine to create a warm feeling reminiscent of the past. The home was designed with family in mind.

Crafted by Cedarstone homes, it was custom-built around an in law suite that has both private and indoor access, one of the first of its kind! This trendsetting plan is perfect for multi-generation family living, maintaining space and privacy for all.

For family members who need their own space, this beautiful two-story home has sophisticated separate living quarters within it. Accessible through the main house or its own entrance, this one bedroom 1200 square foot suite features one and half baths, a gourmet kitchen and living room/dining room areas.

The home greets you at the main entrance with a large foyer, and features hardwood and porcelain tile throughout. The aforementioned wide hardwood staircase leads you to the second level with spacious master bedroom and secondary bedroom both with walk-in closets and individual ensuite baths.

Exploring the main floor there is a chance to cozy up in one of two large family rooms, each with a gas fireplace. Perhaps some members of the family want to watch the football game in one room while others compete at board games in the other. There would be no fighting over which group gets the “good” one because both can enjoy a spectacular room with all this space.

A family-friendly home would not be complete without a mudroom and main-floor laundry. This home also features a walk-in pantry located off the gourmet open concept kitchen that makes it perfect for entertaining and large family gatherings. Moreover, if the family is large enough, there are two additional bedrooms and a full bath in the large finished basement.

The big beautiful backyard is an ideal spot for family picnics and barbeques. Its unique L-shape configuration creates a courtyard in the back yard. It feels like you are in a whole new world with complete privacy. A salt-water pool is tucked away in a corner that makes it invisible from the street.

The location of this home makes it possible to enjoy country living within the city. Historic landmarks, spacious parks and nature trails abound. Modern sports facilities and all the amenities you would expect to find a city are easily accessible in nearby neighbourhoods.

With its hat-tip to history, the home at 54 Mary Hill Crescent in Richmond is available for sale or for rent.
