OPP crackdown on high drivers

OTTAWA, Ont. – A law passed two years ago is helping police catch drivers who are high.
Last year, the number of charges laid against drivers under the influence of drugs in Ontario went up 500 percent, from 40 to more than 200, according to a report in the Ottawa Sun.
A law passed in 2008 made it mandatory for drivers suspected of being high to be evaluated back at the police station.
Many people in Ottawa are pleased the OPP are making drugs a priority on the roads, saying being high behind the wheel is just as dangerous as being drunk.
Word of the crackdown comes one day after voters in California turned down a proposal to legalize pot in that state.
Just a few weeks ago, a Barrhaven woman was killed in a crash there by a driver police suspect was high on marijuana.
