The R.I.D.E program will be out in full force tonight

Every year there are dozens of avoidable accidents and injuries due to impaired driving. The Ottawa Provincial Police are reminding you to drive safe this New Years Eve.
You can expect to see the O.P.P.’s flashing lights at various locations throughout the City of Ottawa, as well as surrounding regions like Gatineau and Lanark County operating the province-wide R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) program.
Even if you are not planning on sipping champagne at midnight, be sure to have your drivers liscense and registration on hand and abide by the Highway Traffic Act.
Ottawa bureau’s Traffic Sargeant Neufeld says to be aware of R.I.D.E. tomorrow as well.
“During festive season R.I.D.E. is a mandatory [program] for us. We conduct rides every single night, not just on New Years Eve. We conduct multiple R.I.D.E.’s day and night.”
Ottawa is part of the Eastern bureau of the O.P.P. So far this festive season in the Eastern region over 30 impaired driving charges have been given and 90 warnings as well.
The R.I.D.E. program also issues tickets for violations of the Highway Traffic Act. Over 1,000 tickets have been issues in relation tot hese violations. Charges include speeding and running red lights.
It is also reminded that for drivers under the age of 22, there is a zero-tolerance policy, in regards to alcohol intake, in effect.
