The Rideau Canal is ready for another season of skating.
The National Capital Commission has opened up a 2.4 km stretch of the longest skating rink in the world – from Pretoria Bridge to Bank Street.
Until the full skateway is open, pedestrians and skaters are asked not to venture onto the closed sections of the skateway where ice is considered unsafe. The NCC typically needs at least a foot of solid ice in any stretch of the canal before they open it to skating. The ice is thick enough to take on maintenance vehicles and skaters between the Pretoria Bridge and Bank Street.
There are several bike and sport shops in the city that have skate sharpening services and skates can be rented right on the canal through most of the season.
