Kanata tech firm gets ready to grow

A big investment in Ottawa’s technology sector.

Ciena Canada has announced it will pump $900 million into its Kanata operation over a five year period.

The investment is a condition of a $25 million grant from the province.  The McGuinty government’s investment is spread over five years.

The major cash injection will create 120 new jobs in research and development and support more than a thousand existing jobs.

Ontario infrastructure minister Bob Chiarelli tells 1310News, this will be a boost to the city’s economy.

“That’s a very significant investment that they’re making,” Chiarelli said.  “It’s a very strong statement that Ottawa is back in technology.”

Ciena bought the optical networking assets from Nortel two years ago.
