Minto could face fines for clearing trees

A major developer has been hit with a stop-work order after some trees were cut down in Orleans.
Minto, the developer, is building a low-rise condo building on Bilberry Dr. between Jeanne D’Arc Blvd. and Hwy. 174.
According to the city, Minto broke the urban tree conservation by-law because a property larger than one hectare needs a permit to allow the clearing of trees, if those trees are 10 cm in diameter or more.
Minto VP Jack Stirling says the company has owned the property for more than 30 years and it has been zoned for development the entire time.
He says some brush was cleared while workers were pre-grading the site. He says to October municipal election has delayed the process of approving Minto’s development plan.
The developer could face fines from the city for violating the urban tree conservation by-law.
