Evergreen line gets environmental approval

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Evergreen line has gotten the go-ahead from BC’s Environmental Assessment Office, one of the required steps in the project moving forward, but funding remains at a standstill.
The assessment found that the project is not likely to significantly impact the environment. But it must ensure proper creek protection, re-vegetation of affected habits and noise management.
Port Moody Mayor Joe Trasolini says it isn’t helping solve the issue of the funding gap, and the Liberal leadership race is not helping either. “It is good news that the environmental assessment has been granted. [There is] not much happening right now. I am afraid to acknowledge that with the change of leadership in the provincial Liberal government, I don’t think that decisions are being made in this area.”
The mayors are discussing the issue on Tuesday, but Trasolini says without a premier at the table, no concrete decisions will be made.
The $1.4-billion project would link Burnaby, Port Moody and Coquitlam and would fully integrate with the existing SkyTrain system.
