Animal rights activists protest at regional spelling bee

Local animal rights activists chose the annual Canspell Spelling Bee to protest eggs.
A small group of eight protesters, some dressed in full chicken outfits and carrying signs like “birds suffer and die for eggs you buy,” gathered at the National Art Gallery.
That was the site for the regional spelling bee.
The Egg Farmers of Canada sponsor that event. Protester Emily Lavender told the Ottawa Sun the farmers are constantly pushing eggs on kids through advertising, but they are so bright they need to know the cruelty behind the egg industry.
Veronica Penny, 13, who is home-schooled, won the event and will be competing in the national championship later this month in Toronto.
The winning word was hubristic.
