Canada issues travel warning for Japan

A travel warning is now in effect for any Canadians wishing to visit Japan.

Foreign Affairs is advising against any non-essential trips to Tokyo and all of the regions hit hard by the earthquake and tsunami including Sendai and Aomori.

Canadians are also being told not to go within 20km of the nuclear power plant in Fukushima.

“There are blackouts of electricity. Supermarket shelves in Tokyo and other major areas are pretty much stripped bare and the country is in an extremely chaotic situation,” says travel agent Lesley Kayter.

In addition to this, roads and railways have been wiped out and there are major disruptions to emergency and medical services.

Kayter says if you already have a ticket to Japan, contact your travel agent or credit card company to see if you can get a refund. Not everyone is guaranteed to get their money back.

If you still plan to go to Japan you’re asked to register with the Canadian embassy.
