No resolution in sight for postal strike

TORONTO – Labour Minister Lisa Raitt’s attempt to end rotating postal strikes has failed as both sides refuse to budge on their positions.
Raitt called yesterday for an end to rotating strikes and an end to Canada Post service cutbacks.
But the Canadian Union of Postal Workers said it would only end the strikes if management re-instated the current collective agreement.
CUPW says Canada Post refused, so the rotating strikes will continue, moving to Red Deer, Alberta this weekend.
For its part Canada Post says it can’t change its plans to reduce mail delivery in most urban areas to three days a week.
It says mail volumes have dropped due to the strikes and it must adjust service levels accordingly.
The union says contract talks are planned this weekend.
